Legacy Gifts
Every legacy gift we receive makes a vital contribution to our work. You legacy will be put to good use, helping local people to engage with nature.

How to leave a gift in your will
After making provision for family and friends, many people choose to remember a favourite charity in their Will. Legacies to UK charities are exempt from UK inheritance tax, and are deducted from your estate before the tax is calculated.
Leaving a gift in your Will to the Steyning Downland Scheme is straightforward, you just need our charity name, number and address:
The Steyning Downland Scheme Limited, First Floor, 53 High Street, Steyning, West Sussex, BN44 3RE
Registered Charity Number 1132957
Types of legacy gift
There are three main types of gift that you can leave:
• A residuary gift: A gift of all or a percentage of what is left of your estate after taxes and debts are paid and all your other legacies have been distributed
• A pecuniary gift: A specific sum of money left to a person or organisation
• A specific gift: A gift of a specific item, such as an object of value, property or land

We strongly recommend that you seek the advice of your solicitor or other professional adviser before making a Will.
If you wish to leave a legacy to The Steyning Downland Scheme in your Will, the following suggested wording may be helpful:
For a residuary gift:
“I give to The Steyning Downland Scheme, of First Floor, 53 High Street, Steyning, West Sussex, BN44 3RE, Registered Charity Number 1132957, a _______________ % share in my estate to be used for general purposes by the said charity.
I declare that the receipt of their Treasurer or duly authorised officer shall be a full and sufficient discharge to my executors.”
For a pecuniary gift:
“I give to The Steyning Downland Scheme, of First Floor, 53 High Street, Steyning, West Sussex, BN44 3RE, Registered Charity Number 1132957 the sum of £ ______________ to be used for general purposes by the said charity. I declare that the receipt of their Treasurer or duly authorised officer shall be a full and sufficient discharge to my executors.”
If you have already made a Will but would like to leave a legacy to The Steyning Downland Scheme, you can do so by adding a Codicil to your existing Will. The Codicil will need to be signed and witnessed in the same way as your Will.
