Chalk Ponds Clearance Project
Background
The Court Mill Chalk Stream boasts a rich history dating back centuries. Initially shaped by human intervention, it has evolved over time, left mostly undisturbed for the past seven decades. Fed by several springs, its source at the base of the Gyll intrigues chalk stream enthusiasts, though it lacks a travertine deposit.
Records from 1461-62 mention two water mills in the area: the East Mill, likely Gatewick Mill, and the West Mill, Court Mill, powered by Fullers Brook. Fulling, a cloth-making process, utilized water mills to thicken and waterproof cloth, introducing Fullers Earth from Persia to Europe via the Crusaders.
The earliest map, dated 1639 and part of the Wiston Archive, depicts the High Street leading to Mouse Lane and Wiston House. Charlton Court, positioned along Horsham Road, and a track to Mouse Lane through the Mill Field, are also noted.
Despite its age, the stream continues to flow, carrying with it the echoes of centuries past, preserved in historical records and maps.
What We Have Done
Steyning Downland Scheme features two ancient millponds interconnected by a chalk stream, comprising a rare and globally significant habitat. Chalk streams, primarily found in southern and eastern England due to their unique geology, are designated as a priority habitat under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP).
Despite its potential for wildlife, the Upper Millpond had deteriorated significantly. Emergency measures were undertaken to address water loss and clear the pond, resulting in marked improvements in water clarity and biodiversity. This transformation was made possible through support from Tesco’s Bags of Help program and the generous assistance of Bill Kear Contractors.
Today, the Upper Millpond stands as a testament to the positive impact of conservation efforts, with its revitalized state serving as a beacon of hope for the preservation of vital habitats. Steyning Downland Scheme remains committed to safeguarding these local treasures for future generations to enjoy and cherish.
