SDS Gateway
Renovation of a Landmark
Our Gateway building, unveiled by Harry Goring in 2018, stands as a testament to perseverance and community support. Thanks to generous contributions from key sponsors like the Wiston Estate, the Wilson Memorial Trust, and the South Downs National Park Authority, this modern facility replaces a rundown Nautical Training Corps hut, breathing new life into the area.
Topped with an innovative green roof supporting both plants and solar panels, The Gateway embraces sustainability. Local school children contributed to the eco-friendly design with nesting structures for bees and bats, creating a haven for wildlife.
Later in 2019, courtesy of a grant from the Rampion Fund, the surrounding area was landscaped to include a natural pond, wildflower meadow and a special ‘bee hotel’.
Beyond being a store, the Gateway serves as an information hub and warm welcome to the Steyning Downland. Nestled off Mouse Lane, it invites us to explore and enjoy its offerings.
